Formmis and the Maré collection: fragments of coastline turned into design

Founded in 2020 by Efraim Tavares, Formmis was born in Pernambuco with a clear proposal: to challenge the accelerated logic of conventional fashion. Working within slow fashion, the label works with the single concept, producing pieces in limited quantity and with attention to process as its creative core. These are not merely clothes, but a continuous enquiry into how design can fragment, recompose itself and create new visualities.

The label's aesthetic is marked by a triad: innovation, fragmentation and design. The creative process begins with dimensioned shapes that unfold into layers and experiments. That dissolving of patterns and structures opens space for visual narratives that move between the concrete and the imagined. Each piece is therefore an expanded prototype, where dressing is understood as a practice of thought, a way of connecting and positioning people through design. That gesture of fragmenting in order to recompose reflects a search for fluidity: dissolving rigid borders between body, garment and space. Formmis understands clothing as a field of open possibilities, where the finish is less a conclusion than a stage of dialogue with whoever wears it.

The Maré collection, launched in 2025, marks the label's fifth year and stands for a return to origins. Inspired by the Northeastern coast, the starting point is not the idyllic postcard, but the daily life of textures, memories and manual techniques that run through the region. The coast appears both in its material elements, sand, salt, ropes, boats, shells, and in its historical echoes: forms of survival, inherited manual gestures, rituals of living with the sea. Every detail of the collection is an attempt to translate that aesthetic exchange between body, nature and memory.

In Maré, design operates as a visual tide: at times advancing in vibrant colours that echo the intensity of the Northeastern sun, at times retreating into neutral tones that recall the wearing of natural elements by time. The fabrics present overlapping layers, embroidery and experimental mixtures, such as the use of rubberised cotton, which puts the organic and the industrial under tension. That approach does not seek simply to reproduce a “beach style”. On the contrary, it proposes a poetics of resistance: on the coast, every object is a testimony of adaptation, nets, fibres, weaves, improvisations, and that logic is translated into clothes that carry memory and durability.
