Osesp presents The Rite of Spring at Sala São Paulo

The Osesp 2025 Season officially begins only on 13 March, but Sala São Paulo is already preparing for a February full of music and memorable artistic encounters. The month opens with the return of the acclaimed free series Concertos Matinais, on 16 and 23 February. In the first concert, the Orquestra Experimental de Repertório under the baton of conductor Leonardo Labrada leads the audience through an intense musical journey, while on the 23rd the Army Symphonic Band, conducted by Eliezer Felipe, takes the stage. Tickets will be distributed online, on the Monday before each event, from midday.

Still in February, on the 25th, a special landmark: the Osesp Choir gives its first performance with its new principal conductor, the British Thomas Blunt. The concert takes place at the Estação CCR das Artes, officially opened on 25 January, on São Paulo's 471st anniversary. The programme promises to move, bringing works by Aylton Escobar, Gustav Holst, William Byrd and Duarte Lobo, composing a sonic panorama that moves between tradition and the contemporary.

Closing that pre-season phase, the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, Osesp, presents a singular encounter: alongside the Deborah Colker Dance Company, it brings to life the production Sagração. Drawing on Igor Stravinsky's iconic score, the staging carries the audience to an ancestral Brazil, where forests, dances and the sounds of original peoples speak with the Slavic tradition, creating a fusion of rhythms and narratives.

When it premiered in 1913, “The Rite of Spring” caused uproar in Parisian cultural circles: with its complex rhythmic structure and Vaslav Nijinsky's bold choreography, the ballet was met with jeers and disturbances. The plot follows a pagan ritual in which a young woman is chosen to dance to her death, offered to the god of spring in a symbolic sacrifice. With 30 years of history and 14 productions staged, the Deborah Colker Dance Company has established itself as one of the most prestigious in Brazil. Sagração closes a trilogy begun with “Cão Sem Plumas” (2017), which explored Northeastern landscapes and the struggle against ignorance, followed by “Cura” (2021), a reflection on the search for repair of what is irreversible.

The concert will be conducted by Claudio Cruz, one of the most renowned Brazilian musicians, who for two decades was Osesp's leader. With that fusion of orchestra and dance, Sala São Paulo reaffirms itself as a vibrant stage of experiment and tradition, uniting past and present in an incomparable sensory and aesthetic experience.
