Santa Resistência: dress as a territory of belonging

Founded by Mônica Sampaio, Santa Resistência is an extension of a path of courage, transition and memory. An electrical engineer by training, Mônica turned the experience accumulated in traditionally male fields into fuel for creating a new Afro-Brazilian visual language, connecting technology, ancestry and affection.

Since 2015 her label has built a repertoire that unfolds between the Bahian recôncavo and the African diasporas, presenting pieces that work as living maps of identity. In every collection, time dilates: the research into history, pattern cutting and raw material translates into clothes that carry rhythms of their own.

At the 58th edition of São Paulo Fashion Week, Santa Resistência presented the collection Manifesto Ancestral, in which past and future intertwine as part of an affective cartography. Intense colours, red, purple, sea blue and aqua green, spread across prints created with Auxi Silveira, while the Maasai mantle, developed by Alex Rocca, works as a visual symbol of crossing and memory. The choice of materials, organic cotton, cotton silk, linen, taffeta, crepe and tilapia leather with QR code traceability, reinforces the convergence between tradition and innovation, ancestry and technology.

With artisanal production, an ethical cycle and a place in the slow fashion circuit, Santa Resistência inscribes its presence in a fashion of cultural impact. It has been part of Sankofa, an initiative formed by racialised labels that put the prevailing codes of the SPFW runways under tension, and has passed through programmes such as Afrolab, Sebrae Moda Afro and the Nordestesse platform.

What Mônica proposes are devices of listening, welcome and expression. In wearing a piece by Santa Resistência, Black bodies occupy public space with intention, memory and pride. The label thus establishes itself as an instrument of symbolic recovery and reconnection with what precedes us and what projects us forward.
