Thomas J Price questions the power of representation in a new show at Hauser & Wirth New York

Hauser & Wirth opens “Resilience of Scale” at its Wooster Street space in New York. In the show, Thomas J Price presents five bronze sculptures that displace the traditional gaze on public monuments. Without resorting to heroic figures, the artist focuses on the ordinary individual, exploring resilience as a central element.

Born in London in 1981, Price builds his work from a combination of traditional sculptural technique and digital process. His work investigates how social values are attributed to images and how those images shape collective narratives. In “Resilience of Scale”, he proposes new bodies for public space, questioning who is legitimated to occupy positions of memory and reverence.

Alongside the exhibition, Price is also making an intervention in Times Square with “Grounded in the Stars”. The sculpture, installed directly at street level, portrays a woman in everyday clothes, breaking the logic of the elevated monuments that dominate the surroundings. The work will be accompanied through May by the animation series “Man Series”, shown on the district's digital screens during the Midnight Moment programme.

Through scale, materiality and the posture of his figures, Thomas J Price puts the limits of monumentalisation under tension, proposing new readings of who and what deserves to be preserved in the urban imagination.

“Resilience of Scale” is open to the public at Hauser & Wirth New York, while “Grounded in the Stars” can be seen in Times Square until 17 June.
