SP-Arte Rotas 2025: new connections between Brazil and Latin America

Between 27 and 31 August, Arca, in São Paulo, hosts the next edition of SP-Arte under a new name: SP-Arte Rotas. The change signals a widening of the fair's scope, which now connects Brazilian artistic production to Latin American dialogues, without losing sight of its local roots.

There will be 65 exhibitors from 12 Brazilian states, alongside representatives from Argentina and the Peruvian Amazon, bringing together established galleries, independent projects and museums. The themes orbiting this edition, eroticism, territory and environmentalism, appear across multiple supports, such as painting, sculpture, ceramics and textile work, reinforcing the fair's vocation as a space of circulation and discovery.

Galleries and artists to watch

Among the confirmed presences are weighty names such as Luisa Strina, Almeida & Dale, Gomide&Co, Mendes Wood DM, Vermelho, Luciana Brito and Flexa, alongside newcomers such as MT Projetos de Arte, MaPa Foto, Isla Flotante (Argentina) and Xapiri Ground (Peru).

The programme also speaks with the 36th Bienal de São Paulo, which takes place the following week. Artists present at both events, such as Gê Viana, Heitor dos Prazeres, Lidia Lisbôa, Maxwell Alexandre, Rebeca Carapiá and Manauara Clandestina, reinforce the fair's role as a platform of visibility for Brazilian art in the international circuit.

Transe and Mirante: new curatorial territories

One of the novelties is Transe, a project by Lucas Albuquerque that brings together five young artists around non-figurative practice, questioning both representation and the canons of abstraction.

The Mirante section, by Rodrigo Moura, curator of Malba in Buenos Aires, occupies a central position at the fair. With large-scale works from different generations and languages, the space sets out to activate reflection on Brazilian identities through the meeting of diverse enquiries.

Projects that cross tradition and experiment

The highlights of this edition include:

• Almeida & Dale com Heitor dos Prazeres, Lidia Lisbôa, Maxwell Alexandre e Rebeca Carapiá, em diálogo com Tunga e Paulo Pasta.
• Xapiri Ground, do Peru, com obras de Gerardo Petsaín Sharup, artista Wampís que cria a partir dos mitos de seu povo.
• Gomide&Co, aproximando as práticas de Teresinha e Valeska Soares.
• Paulo Darzé, de Salvador, conectando Nádia Taquary e Goya Lopes no legado afro-brasileiro.
• Luisa Strina, com um solo de Marepe.
• Galatea, com Tito Terapia, que vem da experiência do pixo para a pintura.
• Flexa, reunindo Adriana Varejão, Tomie Ohtake, Leonilson e Tunga sob o viés do erotismo.
• Cerrado, de Goiânia, com artistas do Centro-Oeste sob curadoria de Divino Sobral.
• Mitre, de Minas Gerais, refletindo sobre colaborações a partir da amizade de Abdias do Nascimento e Sebastião Januário.

In addition, special projects such as Jalapoeira Apurada, made by quilombola women of Jalapão, and Novos Para Nós, with works by Ranchinho, J. Borges and Gilvan Samico, reinforce the dialogue between popular tradition and contemporary experiment.

Talks and international guests

From 28 to 30 August, the SP-Arte stage hosts in-person meetings between artists, curators and researchers. The talks, which are not recorded, range from reflections on popular art and museums to debates on the internationalisation of Brazilian art.

The fair also strengthens its international programme, receiving curators and directors of leading institutions, such as Lucas Morin (Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai), Vivian Crockett (New Museum, New York), Larry Ossei-Mensah (Artnoir), Jennifer Inacio (Pérez Art Museum Miami) and Katherine Brodbeck (Dallas Museum of Art).
